Aaron Paul Teases ‘Better Call Saul’ Cameo

AMC’s “Better Call Saul” is a hit in its own right — but given that it’s a prequel to “Breaking Bad,” fans have been eagerly hoping for cameos from the original series stars like Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.

Now Paul tells Variety that might be a possibility, with the Golden-Globe nominated drama set for its second season premiere February 15.

“Hopefully I will be involved,” he said, during a visit to the Television Critics Assn. press tour to promote his role in Hulu’s upcoming drama “The Path.” “But I don’t know when that may be. I’m not going to say anything more. But I’m absolutely open to the idea. Hopefully it happens. I’m all about it.”

Paul promised that his return to the show would be satisfying to the show’s fans. “If I were to be involved, I can promise that it would be done in the most beautiful way,” he said, “because there’s no way they’re going to bring Jesse Pinkman back just to bring him back. They’re going to bring him back and the audience is going to be very excited not just to see him, but to see how it all unfolded.”

Paul said he’s long been in talks with executive producer Vince Gilligan about his return. “We’ve been talking about it even before they started shooting the show,” he said. “He asked if I would be open to it, and I said of course. ‘Anything you’re involved with, you don’t even have to send me the material. I’ll just say yes. I owe you my career.’ I have a career because of that man. I would do anything he asked me to do.”

Asked if they’ve been talking specifically about this season, he said, “Maybe,” with a laugh. “I don’t want to say anything. All I can say is I do know is there are some very exciting surprises coming up in the second season in ‘Better Call Saul.’ So I highly, highly recommend watching the show.”

That echoes comments from series star Bob Odenkirk, who told Variety, “The fans are going to go crazy. Wait til you see who you see.”

Paul said he’s an unabashed fan of the prequel, having watched every episode and eagerly anticipating the coming season. “I am watching and I’m in love and I’m so excited for everyone involved,” he said. “It’s so exciting to see everyone they bring from ‘Breaking Bad’ into the show. You don’t have to watch ‘Breaking Bad’ to be in love with ‘Better Call Saul.’ It’s a completely different show, completely different tone. It absolutely stands alone. But I love it because I have a deeper emotional connection to it because I was so involved with ‘Breaking Bad.’ And you’re getting a deeper look at all these characters that were so pivotal in ‘Breaking Bad.’”

He also heaped praise on the cast and crew of the show, especially Gilligan. “Vince, he’s a legend,” he said. “Everyone involved is great.”
