Watch Foo Fighters Cover Bryan Adams’ ‘Summer of ’69’
Chevy Metal’s show at Thousand Oaks, California’s Conejo Valley Days Carnival turned into a full-fledged Foo Fighters concert as drummer Taylor Hawkins’ all-covers side project welcomed Foos’ Dave Grohl and Chris Shiflett.
Playing at the festival’s prestigious Rock and Roll Pizza stage on May 9th, the beefed-up Chevy Metal blistered through a wide variety of classic rock covers, ranging from Steve Miller Band’s “Jet Airliner” and Van Halen’s “Panama” to the Knack’s “My Sharona” and Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ’69,” Stereogum reports.
Despite featuring three Foo Fighters, the band didn’t perform anything from the Sonic Highways crew. “I’m just a rhythm guitar player in this band, but Taylor makes me sing once in a while,” Grohl joked before launching into “Summer of ’69,” making Chevy Metal the second high-profile act to cover Adams’ 1984 single in the past two weeks. Chevy Metal’s surprise set also included AC/DC’s “Let There Be Rock,” the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” David Bowie and Queen’s “Under Pressure,” Faces’ “Stay With Me,” and the Cars’ “Let’s Go.”
Chevy Metal also featured Foo Fighters keyboardist-for-hire Rami Jaffee plus Hawkins’ cover band mainstays Wiley Hodgden on bass and Mick Murphy on guitar (both of whom are members in Hawkins’ other side project Birds of Satan). According to the gig’s setlist, Chevy Metal ran through Billy Joel’s “You May Be Right,” John Mellencamp’s “Hurts So Good” and the Rolling Stones’ “Little T&A,” though no video of those performances have surfaced. Incidentally, the aforementioned Rock and Roll Pizza was also the site of a 2013 Chevy Metal gig.
This isn’t the strangest, smallest concert the Foo Fighters have appeared at in 2015: On Record Story Day, the band invaded a strip mall record shop in Niles, Ohio – down the road from Grohl’s hometown – for an audience of 150 lucky fans.
