Sofa King Cool and The Reed Effect teamed up for a first look at their new video for Fine Here
‘This tune is totally in your face rock n roll! It just grabs you by the balls!’
– producer, Ted Sevdalis
Sofa King Cool caught up with Kirk from The reed Effect and we discussed the new video for Fine Here, how he is rereleasing every track as single with a new video, the passing of his brother Chris who was on the album and how this album is a tribute to him, the future of the band and what is next for him
Sofa King Cool was able to have Kirk give us all the details on this new track Fine Here
Tell us about this latest single “Fine Here” what made you come up with the idea for the song?
I’ve had many female friends over the years vent to me about the guys they were seeing and some of the awful things they’ve had to endure.
Being a guy, I can never relate directly to women or anything of course, but I’ve heard countless stories so I wrote a song about it.
It’s somewhat of an anthem for women who have had to deal with some type of nonsense, as the chorus is, ‘Fine here without ya’
Does the song have any personal meaning to you or was it something in an observation you wanted to get across to your fans?
Fine Here isn’t really directly personal. It’s more of an observation from being an ear for my female friends. And not to say I’m holier than thou or anything lol I’m not perfect, and I am a guy. But I’ve grown beyond being that type of person. And it’s difficult to witness what many women have gone through with abusive, lazy and self centered douchebags.
How did you all handle the writing process for “Fine Here” is writing a group process?
I wrote all the lyrics As I do with pretty much all our songs. And I brought the main riff for Fine here to the band. And at that time, The band was my brother, Chris Reed, Bryan Fontez on drums, and myself on guitar and vocals. We jammed it and I remember Bryan saying,’We have a hit’.
Chris laid down a sweet bassline and Bryan brought in a stellar Indian-type beat that worked amazingly.
And the trippy bridge in the song was a total Band effort and we developed it together.
And then our producer Ted Sevdalis helped adjust it a bit from there.
I actually switched the vocal line in the verse to halftime. Lol What you hear in the song now isn’t the original vocal. I had to go in the studio and redo all my vocals for that song, and I’m glad I did.
With touring, and festivals returning, how do you think The Reed Effect will approach it? Do you feel there might be some changes in how you perform live for yourselves moving forward? Is Toronto ready in comparison to the states to open itself do you think to live performances?
Toronto and the rest of Canada for that matter, has been a bit behind compared to the states and other countries, but we’re slowly catching up. Millions of vaccines are coming in and the numbers here are dropping dramatically.
However, I don’t see live performances really being a thing here until the fall.
But when Live music is a possibility, we’re going all out.
How soon do you think the band will be able to get back into performing on stage and possibly festivals and touring? Any dates yet?
My brother, Chris and I were born and raised in the states, so I have a dual citizenship and plan on capitalizing on that. The new line up of this band plan to go south of the border by the fall.
My hope is that there will be a resurgence of Love for live music and more in particular, Rock n roll.
And we want to capitalize on that too and be a part of a new wave of live music and ignite the roaring 20s, round 2.
No dates for shows yet, but hope to start setting things up for the fall real soon.
How would you describe your music to people who never heard it before?
We’re definitely influenced by 90’s grunge as well as classic rock. We’re riff-heavy but fun and dancy as well that would appeal to the masses.
Finish the sentence: The Reed Effect’s music is music created for the
Lovers of Passionate Rock n Roll.
Looking at the rest of 2021 what can your listeners look forward to from you?
We will be releasing 6 singles/videos from our new album, ‘1973’.
And this will all begin this Friday, June 25th, with our first single, ‘Fine Here’.
And every 6 weeks we’ll be dropping another single/video.
We went all out on this album and with our producer, Ted, we ensured every song on this album is single-worthy.
Hailing from Toronto, and having spent the last several years proudly cutting their teeth in the best live music venues north of the border, The Reed Effect have been warping minds with their lyrics, shaking hips with their riffs, and assaulting all five senses with an onslaught of progressively addictive rock hooks that pull from grunge, metal, and blues. Having been tapped as support for bands like Jeff Martin of The Tea Party, The Wild, Die Mannequin, and Busty and the Bass, The Reed Effect have been leaving their unique brand of rock lingering in the air of venues across Canada since day one.
Founding member and frontman/guitarist Kirk Reed along with his brother Chris on bass and backup vocals are formidable. Their new album, 1973, is set to be released in the fall of 2020. The bar is set higher than ever, and the band has never been more proud of the heavy grooves they’re about to unleash.
2020 has been a hard year on all of us, and The Reed Effect has definitely felt that pain. Chris Reed, bassist, vocalist, bandmate, friend, and brother tragically took his own life on October 10th, 2020, just as the new music was about to be released. Being very close, Chris’s death hit Kirk hard. But Kirk feels it is important to let the world hear this music – not just as a tribute to Chris and his legacy, but as a celebration of their collaboration and brotherly love.
“Fine Here” is the first single from 1973. We miss and Love you, Chris. The music you and Kirk worked on will be heard soon.

“‘Fine Here’ is the first single from our new Album, ‘1973’.
My brother and bandmate, Chris Reed, passed away on October 10th, 2020, just days before we were planning to release this album.
Of course, my producer and I postponed the release.
Now is the time to bring the music we created to the masses.
We went all out on this one, and are fortunate enough to have caught some of Chris’s magic and brilliance on this album.
This is his Swan Song. And boy, did he go out with a bang.” – Kirk Reed
