U2 ‘Devastated’ Over Paris Attacks, Cancels Show

The rock band U2 postponed its planned Saturday concert in Paris, saying they are “devastated” by the attacks that killed at least 120 people Friday.

“We watched in disbelief and shock at the unfolding events in Paris and our hearts go out to all the victims and their families across the city tonight,” U2 said in a statement. The show was to be broadcast live by HBO.

French President Francois Hollande called the violence “terrorist attacks of an unprecedented magnitude.”

Suicide bombers blew themselves near a stadium where a closely-watched football game was being played, and gunmen opened fire at a restaurant and a concert venue. Five attackers believed to have carried out the violence are dead, police said.

In the attack at the concert venue, gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at the Bataclan theater where a California band, Eagles of Death Metal, were scheduled to play.

Police officials told The Associated Press that at least 100 people were killed in that attack. The assailants blew themselves up with suicide belts as police closed in, Paris police prefect Michel Cadot.

“We are devastated at the loss of life at the Eagles of Death Metal concert and our thoughts and prayers are with the band and their fans,” the band said “And we hope and pray that all of our fans in Paris are safe.”

The concert will be held at an appropriate time, U2 said in a statement.
