How? Well, like a ’60s spy film, all you need to unlock this secret source of entertainment is the hideen password.

So what’s that all-important command? Try typing “@fbchess play” into a chat window and watch as a compact digital chessboard appears.

Once live, your friend will be offered the first move on the slightly complicated gameplay setup.

Each time you want to make a move, you’ll need to type “@fbchess” followed by the piece abbreviation and the code for the square you want the piece to fill.

So with K standing for King, Q for queen, B for Bishop, N for knight (bizarrely), R for rook, and P for pawn, moving your king to square B6 would require you to enter “@fbchess Kb6” – simple, right?

It’s hardly going to deter you from more intuitive app-based gaming, but it’s a nice touch.
