Terrorists Take 100 People Hostage At EAGLES OF DEATH METAL Show In Paris

This story is still developing but here is what we know: a string of terrorist attacks have hit Paris this evening with at least 18 dead, with some outlets reporting as many as 30 dead. There is a hostage situation at a Paris concert venue, Bataclan, where the Eagles of Death Metal played a sold out show. The terrorists reportedly have 100 people held hostage (originally reported as 60). There are six to eight attackers inside the venue currently engaged in a shootout with police.

Gawker reports:

According to reports, “several people were killed and seven others injured” during a shootout by a man reportedly armed with an AK-47 inside a Paris restaurant in the tenth arrondissement. And according to the BBC, a reporter saw at least another ten people lying dead or seriously injured after a separate shooting at a restaurant called Cambodge in the 11th district.

There are reports that three separate “explosions” could be heard in the French soccer stadium, where French President François Hollande was watching a French-German match. He was quickly evacuated. You can hear a supposed explosion that happening during the game in this Vine video:

Shots rang out Friday night at Bataclan, a music venue in Paris where Eagles of Death Metal were playing, with several people dying and more than 100 people taken hostage as a result of the terrorist attack, according to ITV News.

Fifteen people have died at the club, according to The Associated Press, and hostage taking is underway. The New York Times reported that a witness told French television that someone shouted “Allahu Akbar,” “God is greatest,” as the shooting occurred. Police are ordering bystanders off the streets around the venue.

The status of the band members, which include singer Jesse Hughes and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, is unclear. Rolling Stone has reached out to the group’s reps for more information. A Twitter user reported, though, that the group was onstage during the shooting.

French group Red Lemons posted to Facebook (via BrooklynVegan) that the members of Eagles of Death Metal were safe and not hostages. They added, “Mikel Ross, Eric McFadden, we were with your mates Jesse, [Hughes’ partner] Tuesday [Cross], the other musicians outside, they’re safe too, they took a cab.”

We are safe. Mikel Ross, Eric McFadden we were with your mates Jesse, Tuesday, the other musicians outside, they’re safe too, they took a cab.

A friend of opening band White Miles posted on that group’s Facebook page that the group was OK. “Just heard from the band and they’re safe,” Ben Gazey wrote.

The shootout was one of multiple attacks that occurred in the city that night. The Times reported that another one occurred at the city’s sports stadium, where France’s soccer team was playing Germany, prompting the evacuation of President François Hollande. Another took place in a restaurant in the same general area.

President Hollande has subsequently declared a state of emergency in France and has ordered the borders closed, according to Buzzfeed.

Police officers have the AP that as many as 26 people had been killed in total as a result of the shootings and explosions. In addition to those dead at the concert, 11 were killed in a restaurant in the neighboring arrondissement. The Times is reporting a more conservative number of deaths, stating as many as 18.

The wave of violence is France’s deadliest terrorist attack in decades

The Times said the French media reported that people had been seen carrying Kalashnikov rifles. It also underscored that the attacks took place near the former headquarters of Charlie Hebdo, the satirical publication that saw 12 of its employees murdered in January by Islamist gunmen for its depiction of Muhammed.

Dozens of people were standing outside their cars on the junction opposite and the lights of police cars could be seen above them.

Eyewitness Ben Grant, who was in a nearby bar with his wife at the time, said he saw six or seven bodies on the ground.

He told the BBC: ‘I was told people in cars had opened fire on the bar. There are lots of dead people. It’s pretty horrific to be honest.

‘I was at the back of the bar. I couldn’t see anything. I heard gunshots. People dropped to the ground. We put a table over our heads to protect us. We were held up in the bar because there was a pile of bodies in front of us.’

Emilioi Macchio from Italy was at a bar close to where the restaurant shooting took place, and said it ‘sounded like fireworks’.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named.

Paris’ deputy mayor said the attacks were a horrific reminder of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in January.

‘It’s a heavy recollection of what happened in January (C. Hebdo). Now we are struck again. This is harder. I am shaken,’ he said.

David Cameron said that he was ‘shocked by events in Paris’ and pledged to do ‘whatever we can to help’, adding: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the French people.’

The restaurant targeted Friday, Le Carillon, is in the same general neighborhood as the Charlie Hebdo offices.

France has been on edge since ISIS extremists launched a bloody attack on the satirical newspaper and a kosher grocery that left 20 people – including the three attackers – dead.

The attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left 13 dead when two Paris born terrorists slaughtered its cartoonists and general staff members.

Four Jewish shoppers were also murdered in the same set of attacks inside a Kosher supermarket in nearby Vincennes.

The French capital has been on a high state of alert ever since, with security services warning that another attack was always likely.

ISIS’s online supporters have already started to celebrate the devastating attack in Paris, using the hashtag ‘Paris in fire’ on social media, but it has not been confirmed whether the terror group is behind the attacks.
