Sons Of Anarchy Rock Star Cameos
FX’s Sons Of Anarchy is hand’s down one of televisions best show, so it’s unsurprising that there would be some Rock Stars who want a chance to be on one of their favorite shows, the crime drama following everyone’s favorite outlaw motorcycle club. In fact, there’s been a handful of rockers who’ve had recurring roles
Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction)
When you think of people to play Latino gangsters, you immediately think of… Dave Navarro? Apparently, since that’s who the show tapped to play a member of the Byz-Lats gang affiliated with Nero Padilla (the “companionator” played by actor Jimmy Smits). Not only did Navarro appear in a few episodes during season 5, but Jane’s Addiction’s cover of “Sympathy For The Devil” appeared in the season 5 finale and on the Songs of Anarchy: Vol. 2 soundtrack.
DJ Ashba (Guns N’ Roses/Sixx A.M.)
The GN’R/Sixx A.M. guitarist’s appearance barely counts as a cameo. In fact, if you blinked for a second while watching episode 12 of season five, you’ll easily miss seeing Ashba standing in as an extra, casually chatting with members of SAMCRO in the clubhouse. Yet there he is, just randomly appearing there without any explanation for his presence. Ironically, though, one could argue that he played a bigger role in that episode than he did in the That Metal Show interview.
Sean McNabb (Quiet Riot, Dokken)
McNabb became the bass player of the 80s metal band Quiet Riot he joined Dokken as their bassist in 2009 and was a mainstay with the band until 2014. He has recorded over 35 CD’s in his discography. He has also toured and recorded with House of Lords, Great White, Lynch Mob, Montrose, Edgar Winter, Maya, Bad Moon Rising, Rough Cutt, and XYZ. In addition to music, he is acting in Hollywood in film and television, most recently on FX TV’s Sons of Anarchy and as Host of Best of AXS TV Concerts 2012 – Legends of Rock.
Rusty Coones (Attika 7)
Rusty Coones is a founding member of the Orange County chapter of the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club and president of the San Fernando Valley chapter of the club. So it’s not a stretch to picture the Attika 7 guitarist as Quinn, the president of the Nomad chapter (featuring club members who don’t belong to a specific charter). While we don’t see Quinn until season five (appearing in two episodes, with plans to appear in the new season as well), he’s a character that’s been referenced since the show’s beginning. And not only has Attika 7 contributed songs to the show over the years, but he’s also friends with the show’s creator Kurt Sutter
Anvil
In episode two of season two, there’s a scene where Opie and Tig are gathering firearms in a kitchen. “Wait, wasn’t that Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner of Anvil?” you may have asked yourself when watching the scene. While very brief, Lips and Reiner do indeed make a cameo as gun runners. How the hell did that come about? Well according to Lips, show creator Kurt Sutter (who also lived across the street of Sacha Gervasi, the director of Anvil! The Story of Anvil) is a big fan of Anvil and asked them to make a cameo in an episode, as well as contribute a cover of The Who’s “Slip Kid” to the Sons Of Anarchy: North Country EP.
Henry Rollins
To compose such a list and NOT include Henry Rollins would be just plain outrageous. In fact, the legendary punk frontman’s character was a pivotal part of the show’s second season. Rollins played A.J. Weston, the muscle/street leader of League of American Nationalists, who aimed to destroy SAMCRO and take over the town of Charming. His character was the poster-child of a violent, hate-filled white supremacist, having no compassion for anyone of a different race. He even goes as far as to gang rape Gemma Teller [the mother of Jax, portrayed by Katey Sagal]. It’s a character that Rollins described as “the kind of ‘bad guy’ you don’t root for… at all.” It’s also a type of character whose morals completely differ to Rollins’, who in real life is a very outspoken human rights activist.
Sen Dog (Cypress Hill)
Cypress Hill has had some crossover in the rock world (touring with everyone from Rage Against The Machine to even The Offspring, and even teaming up with Slash for a cover of “Paradise City”). And in season four, Sen Dog of the hip hop group portrayed a Mexican drug cartel soldier named Santo Rivera. It wasn’t a major role (only appearing in two episodes), but did feature the rapper testing out some guns
Marilyn Manson
Marilyn Manson plays recurring role Ron Tully on the seventh season of Sons of Anarchy. He plays a white supremacist, prison shot-caller who main character Jax uses to expand his power. Manson is reported to appear in the first seven episodes, so does that mean that he meets an untimely death in the seventh episode? Either way He sure loves Juice!
Manson and his father were fans of the show for a long time before Manson became a part of the cast. He told Entertainment Weekly:
Sons has been such a big part of my life, as well as my father’s. So I was determined to make him proud by being involved in what will probably be remembered as the most amazing piece of television cinema. After all, the very heart of SOA is about that relationship. So, now all I need is a motorcycle.
Courtney Love
On the episode “Poor Little Lambs,” we meet Ms. Harrison, Jax’s son Abel’s preschool teacher, who is played by Courtney
Katey Sagal
Even Jemma herself is a bit of a Rock Star.
In 1976, while a member of ‘The Group With No Name’, Katey contributed to the album “Moon over Brooklyn.” She was a member of Bette Midler’s backup group ‘The Harlettes’ in 1978 and 1982–1983. She performed backing vocals on the self-titled solo album by Gene Simmons as well as background vocals on Olivia Newton-John’s 1985 single “Soul Kiss”
She recently released “Covered”, her first studio album in nine years, the Sons of Anarchy star takes on songs by Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Gillian Welch, Joni Mitchell and more. The project’s first single, which debuts here ahead of the album’s November 11th release, reimagines Tom Petty’s 1989 classic “Free Fallin’.”
