Original cast members sign on for Trainspotting 2, release set for 2017

Danny Boyle previously announced his intentions to helm a sequel to his drug-fueled black comedy Trainspotting. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony’s Tristar Studios has signed on to finance and distribute the film. What’s more, all four original cast members, Ewan McGregorRobert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ewen Bremner, have confirmed their participation.

Trainspotting 2 will be based on Porno, author Irvine Welsh’s 2002 sequel to the originalTrainspotting novel. Porno picks up with the characters 10 years after the incidents of the first book as Sick Boy (Miller) is attempting to clean up his life and turn his newly inherited pub into a classy establishment, financed by allowing it to be the set of an adult film. Spud (Bremner) has fallen into a deep depression after kicking his heroine habit, and Renton (McGregor) has opened a successful club in Amsterdam and agrees to help finance Sick Boy’s film. He’s also mastered martial arts in anticipation of Begbie’s (Carlyle) eventual release from prison. How closely Trainspotting 2 will follow this story isn’t yet clear, though John Hodges, who earned an Oscar nomination for his first Trainspotting script, has already turned in a “terrific” screenplay.

Production for the film is slated to begin in spring 2016 with a release date planned for sometime in 2017.
