Marvel’s Own Stan Lee Believes An ‘Avengers’ And ‘Star Wars’ Crossover Is Possible
The Walt Disney Company currently owns two of the biggest film properties in the entire world, and they are a multi-billion dollar industry. Well, owning LucasFilm and Marvel Entertainment is something that has given Disney material to make money for decades and decades, but what if there was more? Marvel legend Stan Lee thinks that an epic crossover between Star Wars and Marvel movies such as The Avengers is quite possible, and he explains how.
Yes, let that sink in for a minute before going on.
For years and years, fans have dreamed of their being some kind of crossover with Star Wars and Marvel, but that goes back decades into the comics. Now, Disney has the opportunity to do something amazing and epic, but would they ever pull that trigger?
Stan Lee did an interview with The Big Issue, and he discussed such a possibility. The thing is, what would happen if Iron Man came face-to-face with Darth Vader? Could Captain America partner up with Luke Skywalker to take on Kylo Ren and Loki?
Lee doesn’t see it as something that isn’t already being looked at.
“Obviously the people who produce these [movies] are looking to be as successful as possible. If they feel that incorporating Star Wars with the Marvel characters will be very successful, they’ll find a way to do it. Can you imagine Spider-Man saying, ‘May the force be with you?’ It may come to that!”
Marvel Entertainment and Disney just recently got a big boost, and it came in a deal with Sony. An agreement was reached to have Spider-Man enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe and be included in Captain America: Civil War, his own solo film, and likely others such as Avengers: Infinity War.
As ComicBook stated, Disney does own the cinematic rights to both the Marvel Studios films (for the most part) and Star Wars, so it’s legally possible. Right now, the crossover probably isn’t anywhere close though, so don’t freak out just yet.
Still, Lee thinks that anything is possible.
With Civil War, there are going to be a lot of characters in it, but it’s nothing like what will happen with the two-part Avengers: Infinity War. Lee thinks that Civil War is going to be “the most expensive film ever produced” and he doesn’t how “how many characters you can have in a movie but anything that the public want to see you can be sure it will eventually be produced.”
In the comics, Lee brought together different storylines, teams, and titles in a unique way, and that was by creating The Avengers.
“I created the Avengers by taking many of our characters and making a team out of them. We can have as many characters join the Avengers as we want to for future movies. That might be fun, all of a sudden Luke Skywalker is an Avenger!”
Luke Skywalker…as an Avenger. What!?!
Again, don’t look for a Star Wars and Avengers crossover anytime soon. Right now, Marvel has a slate of films through 2020 in place and are already beginning work on Phase Four. Star Wars Episode VIII will be released in 2017 and Star Wars Episode IX in 2019, so there are a lot of plans in place for both.
Still, the future is bright for both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and LucasFilm on their own and Disney seems to know what they’re doing. Stan Lee saying something like this though, it gets the gears moving in everyone’s mind and really has them hoping, wishing, and wondering. If there ever is a Star Wars and Avengers crossover film, Stan Lee will be the one to say, “Told you so.”
