Katy Perry, John Mayer, Woody Harrelson Celebrate Fourth of July with the Grateful Dead

Fare Thee Well brings VIPs to Chicago.

Night two of the Grateful Dead‘s three-night Fare Thee Well run came with sparks as the city of Chicago celebrated independence day and the pop star who saw a Billboard No. 1 hit with the song “Firework” decided to spend her Fourth of July in the windy city.

Katy Perry was in town with on-again, off-again boyfriend John Mayer, who has attended every Fare Thee Well show so far (five in total, wrapping on July 5). The two spent time hanging out with Dead guitarist and singer Bob Weir on Friday night and made their way to Soldier Field for the Saturday night show.

Other VIPs in the crowd on July 4 included actor Woody Harrelson, Sonic Youth‘s Lee Ranaldo, Minnesota Senator Al Franken, former NBA all-star (and Dead regular) and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame.

Lewis was one of several guest players to take the stage the night before at City Winery, where Alex Bleeker of the band Real Estate hosted his own tribute night. Also offering renditions of Dead classics — part of the venue and eatery’sWeir World series — were indie rockers Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Kyle Field of Little Wings and Ranaldo, who took on the surefire crowd-pleaser “Bertha.”
