John Carpenter on Rob Zombie “That Piece of Shit Lied”
Believe it or not, it’s been about a decade since Rob Zombie brought back Michael Myers in his very own Halloween remake, and though the franchise is tossing aside everything he brought to the table with next year’s reboot, many fans of the series have still never quite made peace with Zombie’s vision. But what does John Carpenter think? Years later, he has finally offered up his opinions.
During a recent interview with the students of the New York Film Academy, which began making its way around the internet this week, Carpenter was asked point blank for his thoughts on remakes, particularly the one Rob Zombie made of his seminal slasher classic. Carpenter, never one to mince words, had some rather harsh things to say not just about the film, but about Zombie himself.
Carpenter relayed a story about a Halloween documentary special that Zombie took part in, noting that he took exception with something Zombie said during the made-for-TV doc.
“He lied about me. He said that I was very cold to him when he told me that he was going to make [Halloween],” said Carpenter. “Nothing could be further from the truth. I said, ‘Make it your own movie, man. This is yours now. Don’t worry about me.’ I was incredibly supportive. Why that piece of shit lied, I don’t know. He had no reason to. Why did he do it?”
“So, frankly, that will color my response to the film,” he continued. “If I take that away, I did not… I thought that he took away the mystique of the story by explaining too much about [Michael Myers]. I don’t care about that. He’s supposed to be a force of nature. He’s supposed to be almost supernatural. And he was too big. It wasn’t normal.”
