Everyone and their mother is trying to put on a music festival in New York next summer

Following last night’s debacle that was game five of the World Series, there’s a new fight brewing in Queens, New York. Turns out everyone and their mother is wanting to stage a music festival in the borough next summer, and it’s led to one big brouhaha between major concert promoters and the mayor’s office.

Already we’ve heard AEG’s plans for Panorama Music Festival, a Coachella-style three-day event to take place at Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park from June 17th – 19th. Governors Ball, which for the last five years has also taken place in June just eight short miles away in Randall’s Island Park, has since petitioned the mayor’s office to reject AEG’s proposal.

Now, the New York Post brings word of another planned festival being put together by Madison Square Garden. And get this, the current proposal has it taking place in the same location as Panorama, just one week after Panorama on the weekend of June 24th and 26th.

MSG’s festival would celebrate food and entertainment in addition to music, the Postreports, and has the advantage of having Irving Azoff in its corner. The music mogul, who manages talent including Fleetwood Mac, No Doubt, Gwen Stefani, and The Eagles, has a live-events partnership with MSG.

It’s worth noting that Flushing Meadows Corona Park has never hosted a for-profit event. MSG is also apparently planning a free community celebration in Queens on June 18th, which may be a way to convince the mayor’s office to allow a separate ticketed event. In any case, it’s hard to imagine three major festivals co-existing in one city, let alone one as big as New York City. Buckle up, because I’m sure there is plenty more drama to come.

Update – 5:00 p.m.: Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is opposed to hosting any for-profit event at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, according to the New York Daily News.
