Dead and Company used their Kimmel appearance to stump for marijuana legalization

Dead and Company is the super collaboration featuring members of the Grateful Deadperforming alongside John Mayer. Last night, the band were booked for Jimmy Kimmel Live, and like the jam band that they are, Dead and Company used the appearance to campaign for nationwide marijuana legalization.

According to the LA Times, the band brought along 300 fans to last night’s performance, all of who wore pro-marijuana T-shirts and carried signs. Some folks even dressed up as giant joints. Dead and Company also sought to have the performance sponsored by a marijuana-advocacy group, but were rebuffed by the Disney-owned ABC.

“The folks it would be hitting on that broadcast would be outside our normal sphere of influence,” Bob Weir explained to the Times. “We’re about music, but we’re about other stuff as well, and we always have been. We need to make our feelings on the subject as apparent as we can.”

On the music front, Dead and Company entertained their stoner fans by performing “Bertha”, “Not Fade Away”, “Fire on the Mountain”, “Scarlet Begonias”. The appearance came in anticipation of the band’s summer tour, which includes a two-set headlining appearance at Bonnaroo.
