The New ‘Scream’ Mask Is Here To Haunt Your Nightmares

When MTV first announced that the classic film franchise “Scream” would be coming to TV (on June 30, in case you haven’t already marked your calendar with a bloody “X”), one of the big questions was what the series’ masked killer would look like. And now, thanks to an exclusive reveal over at EW, we know: the ghost faced killer is back, and more terrifying than ever.

The new mask is a riff on the classic look, updated for a new generation… And a new batch of teens just ready for the offing.

What’s most striking about the new look is the curve on the features, which really makes you feel bad for the dude (or lady) who is about to stab you until you’re dead. That is, except for his (or her) mouth, which looks like something straight out of our nightmares.

“The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience,” exec producer Jaime Paglia told EW.

At the very least, the new shape of the mouth looks like a lamprey, or some sort of hideous predator… Which makes sense, as this new (old? seriously, we’re dying to know more about the mystery and still have to wait a month) killer is ready to take down the entire town of Lakewood.

Even Wes Craven, creator of the original film franchise, is a fan. “The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction,” Craven told EW. “It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.”

Looks like we won’t be sleeping for at least the next month.

“Scream” premieres on MTV on June 30.
