The Killers & Jimmy Kimmel Show Their Christmas Spirit on ‘Joel, the Lump of Coal’

Christmas songs usually revolve around a small set of characters: Santa Claus, the reindeer and maybe Frosty. The Killers are aiming to change that with their new holiday track, “Joel, the Lump of Coal,” created with the help of Jimmy Kimmel. Check it out below.

The Killers have recorded a new Christmas song every year since 2006. All the proceeds from the track’s sales benefit the RED campaign. In the past, they have collaborated with Dawes and Elton John. This year, they brought in Kimmel. His first song idea, “A very YOLO Christmas,” was unfortunately shot down, but “Joel, the Lump of Coal” is a heart-warming alternative.

In the song, Joel is living happily on the North Pole, minding his own business, until Santa decides to teach a naughty kid a lesson by giving him coal as a present. Joel doesn’t want to go, but Santa is mean, so he takes Joel anyway. At the end, selfless Joel turns into a diamond to make the naughty boy happy. Kimmel says, “The result may very well be the greatest holiday song ever recorded by non chipmunks.” Hopefully Joel will be a fixture of the Christmas season for years to come.
