Billy Corgan Shuts Down Fan Who Asks Him If Courtney Love Killed Kurt Cobain

During a Smashing Pumpkins VIP question and answer event on July 13 in Colorado, a fan asked singer Billy Corgan if he thought Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain. Corgan responded by questioning if the man was really asking him that and then said he would not answer it, asking the fan in return “what does that have to do with me?”

We’ve cued up video from the Q&A session for you to observe the fan’s odd delivery of the question and Corgan’s handling of his answer. Alternative Nation transcribed the interaction, which as Corgan points out “starts with band rivalry” and then goes into conspiracy and grunge music.

Fan: So, I recently saw Soaked in Bleach, and the other one, the HBO one. I feel like there’s an unnecessary rivalry between Manson … because I like all kinds of music. I talk to some friends and they’re like, ‘Oh, I hate so and so.’ Do you think Courtney killed Kurt? (Fans laugh)
Billy Corgan: Are you legitimately asking me this question here?
Fan: If you care to answer it.
Billy Corgan: No, I don’t care to answer it because I think it’s-
Fan: Anything in that realm you care to elaborate on?
Billy Corgan: But what does that have to do with me?
Fan: Um, I don’t know, just because this is similar, some people-
Billy Corgan: You started out by talking about inter band rivalry, and then we got to conspiracy theory.
Fan: Yeah, because my brain does that sometimes. And um, do you consider yourself Grunge?
Billy Corgan: Nope, never did. I use the term loosely because it defines an era, like psychedelic.
Fan: Contemporaries, but not-
Billy Corgan: That was a Seattle word we got pasted with.
Fan: Oh, so you feel like that was put on you.
Billy Corgan: Go back and read the press. Does anyone looking back really think we were a Grunge band? (Fans say no) Does our work hold up as beyond Grunge? Thank you, it is self-evident.

Corgan, along with the rest of the Smashing Pumpkins, are currently on tour with Marilyn Manson. The acts kicked off The End Times trek on July 7 in Concord, Calif., and will play through Aug. 8 when they wrap things up in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Original Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has rejoined the group for the tour. Chamberlain last left the Pumpkins in 2009 to work on side projects and his company LiveOne. Chamberlain said of rejoining the band, “He [Corgan] asked if there was any way I’d consider coming back for the tour. It’s a great opportunity not only to celebrate the music, but to celebrate the friendship and the legacy.” Chamberlain went on to say that he has no plans to permanently rejoin the Pumpkins after their Manson tour dates and will continue to focus on his side projects and his company.
